Arrgh! It's One of Those Days...

...Got home for my trip early this afternoon. Connected my 416-8B drivers(from "My Experiment" thread), and ......one of them is rubbing badly!! I just bought this drivers recently!!!

I have to send it to GPA for repair. Or is it reconed? Can this be repaired or need total recone? I am in Southern California and shipping this thing is a pain!! Not to mention the wait!

There's a repair shop close to where I am at that works on Altec stuff (Orange Calif. about 10 miles away from me) but I have not seen any post from members using their service and had a good experience with it. I guess GPA= peace of mind.

    Long shot....

Altec cones are heavy. Try rotating the speaker. SOMETIMES the speaker has been stored in a position and cone sag has pulled it off center....

Prolly won't work but don't cost much to try....

Yeah, placing them face up on a ~ level surface someplace that's hot and not too dusty can do wonders for a misalignment.

If it turns out they do need to be repaired, definitely go with GPA. They reconed a 416-8A for me last year and it came back sounding identical to it's mate. Bill was very helpful answering my questions on the phone before I sent it in to them--it was repaired in just a few days with their (GPA) recone kit that matches original Altec specs. Bill mentioned that the guy who did the repair for me had been repairing Altec speakers for over 20 years and was also a former Altec Lansing employee--hard to beat that! I would never have any of my Altec gear repaired anywhere else.....

Re: Arrgh! It's One of Those Days...

Thank a lot guys! What can I say, this forum is amazing.

Yes, if I have to send the driver for repair, GPA it will go. I dealt with Bill and Steve before, very nice fellas, and top notch service work (on my 802D's).

    Thanks again guys!!!!
